Rickmansworth Aquadrome

Background Information

Rickmansworth Aquadrome is a popular public green space managed by Three Rivers District Council, featuring two large lakes used for recreation, angling, and nature observation. Over time, infrastructure around Batchworth Lake had become worn, unsafe, or inaccessible, including numerous fishing swims and platforms used by local angling clubs and members of the public.

Three Rivers District Council commissioned Aquamaintain Ltd to carry out significant upgrades to the fishing swims and to construct a new viewing/fishing platform beside the Sailing Club. The aim was to improve accessibility, safety, and environmental sustainability while enhancing the site’s amenity value and preserving its ecological function.

Scope of the Project

Refurbishment of 20 fishing swims around Batchworth Lake.

Installation of 8 new recycled plastic swim.

Creation of 1 BDAA-compliant (accessible) platform.

Tree and vegetation clearance to improve access and visibility.

Resurfacing and improvements to access paths and banks.

Construction of a new 21.5m x 4.5m recycled plastic platform.

The fishing platforms and viewing deck were built using Hahn recycled plastic components, chosen for their long-life span, structural strength, and minimal environmental impact.

Our Solution

A phased delivery was used to manage public safety and maintain open access to unaffected parts of the park throughout the works.

Fishing swims were installed using a modular system. In areas of soft or unstable ground, swims were supported with gabions and recycled plastic revetments, and surfacing was stabilised with geotextile and graded gravel.

At the Sailing Club, the recycled plastic platform was constructed using a combination of driven recycled plastic legs (including reinforced corner legs), bearers, joists, and anti-slip decking. Handrails were installed to the full perimeter, and integrated benches provided space for users to enjoy lake views.
